Essential WordPress Plugins

Like any blog running on WordPress, I don’t know where dnxpert.com would be if it weren’t for the numerous wonderful wordpress plugins that it uses almost daily.

Because I know there are many people still learning about blogging and using wordpress and all its wonderful features, I thought I’d put together a post outlining the various wordpress plugins that I install on every new blog I start.

These are basically wordpress plugins that I think any blog is incomplete without.

Akismet – The ultimate spam prevention plugin when it comes to wordpress spam plugins. Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not. You need a WordPress.com API key to use it. You can get an API key from wordpress.org, it’s free.

All In One SEO Pack – the ultimate SEO plugin. Helps you autogenerate titles, keywords, descriptions if you wish to do that. Also helps you prevent duplicate content penalties, and so much more. An absolute must for any WordPress installation.

Enhanced WP Contact form – WP Contact Form is a drop in form for users to contact you. In the message it sends to you it gives the page the user visited before the contact page, as well as the original outside referer.

Google Analytics for WordPress – This plugin makes it simple to add Google Analytics with extra search engines and automatic clickout and download tracking to your WordPress blog.

Google Sitemaps – This plugin will generate a sitemaps.org compatible sitemap of your WordPress blog which is supported by Ask.com, Google, MSN Search and YAHOO.

Math comment spam protection – Asks the visitor making the comment to answer a simple math question. This is intended to prove that the visitor is a human being and not a spam robot. Example of such question: What is the sum of 2 and 9?

Impostercide – Prevents unauthenticated users from “signing” a comment with a registered users email address.

Permalink Redirect – Permalink Redirect ensures that pages and entries are always accessed via the permalink. Otherwise, a 301 redirect will be issued.

Simple Trackback Validation – Eliminates spam trackbacks by (1) checking if the IP address of the trackback sender is equal to the IP address of the webserver the trackback URL is referring to and (2) by retrieving the web page located at the URL used in the trackback and checking if the page contains a link to your blog.

Sociable – Automatically add links on your posts to popular social bookmarking sites.

WordPress Database backup – On-demand backup of your WordPress database.

Wp-Cache – Very fast cache module. It’s composed of several modules, this plugin can configure and manage the whole system.

Wp-Affiliate-Pro – the ultimate affiliate link management plugin. Hide your affiliate links, get detailed click stats, replace specific product tags inside your existing posts with affiliate links and so much more.

Wp-optin-comments – an absolutely amazing plugin that let’s you build your newsletter subscriber lists by leveraging the commenting feature of WordPress. You can plugin your aweber, getresponse etc lists using this plugin to the wp-optin-comments plugin to exponential increase your double-opt-in subscriber lists.

If you know of some more essential plugins, do share your thoughts.

  1. Thanks for this great list! I’m one of the those newbie WordPress people and have been searching through the wp plugin directory not knowing which plugins are the best ones and which have been integrated into the new version. It’s nice to have a nice list of the essentials.
